We added a two player co-operative mode to Gunslugs which literally doubles the fun you can have with this game. Sadly this is not a game mode that everyone can play, but we will do our best explaining the various ways you can accomplish this!  We have split it up in Android and iOS solutions:

Android

There are various ways to have a two player game on Android, however most of these require some sort of controller/joystick. Luckily the easiest option available is a controller that many homes already have, so here we go:

option 1 : Use two wii-motes.

If you have two wii-motes available, it’s very easy to get your two player game going. First you will need to download the Wii-mote controller app (free) from Google Play. It comes with some instructions, but basically you initialise the connection (first button on the wii-mote controller app screen) with the wii-motes, and pressing 1+2 on the wii motes. The app should be able to connect with both your wiimotes. This sometimes fails, so just give it a couple of shots and make sure there is enough battery power in your wii-motes.

Once the connection is made, use the second button on the app screen to select the Wii-mote controllers as main input (basically they act as bluetooth keyboards from this point on).

And that’s it. If you’r two wii motes are connected, you should be able to play Gunslugs in two player mode with the default key setup.

Option 2 – OUYA!

The OUYA is not released yet, but this Android-based console will be available early 2013, and Gunslugs will be coming to OUYA!. Playing the co-op mode should be just a matter of starting the game and playing it, since the OUYA is going to have two controllers attached to it ;)

option 3 : Use bluetooth controllers

The second option requires a little extra work, first of all you actually need to own two bluetooth controllers!  We did all our testing with two Phonejoy controllers and they are pretty good and solid for gaming.  Most controllers should work with the free Bluez IME app, again downloadable from Google Play.

Now there is one extra step to take, compared to the Wii-mote solution. You have to change the keys that Bluez IME uses for the second controller.  You can leave the first controller on it’s default settings, but for the second controller use the following keys:

Dpad Left – A
Dpad Right – D
Dpad Up – W
Dpad Down – S
Button 1 – BUTTON_A
Button 2 – BUTTON_B
Button 3 – DPAD_CENTER
Button 4 – BUTTON_X

You can leave the others on default.

iOS (iPhone, iPod, iPad)

For iOS it can be a bit harder or more expensive to get things running but not impossible! So read on:

Option 1: use Joypad

Joypad is a free app available on the App store and it turns your device into a controller. All our games support it, and Gunslugs is no different. The downside on this is that you need at least three iDevices: one to run the game on, and two to use as controllers. Now it sounds expensive, but most of us have an iPad and an iPhone or iPod, so get your friend over and let him take his iPod or iPhone, and you’re set!   Simply turn on the Joypad app on both controller devices, and start Gunslugs !

Option 2: use the iosGameDock

We’ve been working closely with the guys behind the iosGameDock, and it’s the perfect solution for Gunslugs! A dock that turns your iDevice into a retro-console with two controllers attached to it!  Just dock your iDevice, and get going ;)
