Mapping out space and tweaking dungeons in this week’s dev update

More game development this week, taken straight from the developer’s TODO list and task management, here’s an overview of what has been fixed, changed, updated, improved or generally worked on in the Orangepixel Universe.

I started this week tweaking and improving Gauntlet of Power beta test (sign-ups on the discord). A good idea from the beta test was adding a trader station to swap gems (which are used to power some of your items). So new Trader rooms will now appear in the dungeon every now and then!

 

The rest of the week was mostly some tinkering on Space Grunts 3, trying to split up my “task” into tiny work-blocks like I did with the Gauntlet of Power stuff.

So first was rendering the map, then added teleporters, and made them functional from the map.

Next up is probably defining some room types that will be a key to how the player decides his movement directions and how to use his turns

 

The return of the Hypergate (see Residual) – for now it’s the “goal” in the level to close it. Some code from Residual, some new, and now all working. Next task!

Still testing out gameplay tweaks, which had me busy the rest of the week, as I try to incorporate some sort of timer/countdown mechanism.. more info on how that’s going in a future update!

  • added: HUD flash on powerup items (Dashboots, Armor, Voodoo doll, etc)
  • At some point only the Horn item keeps spawning (pool isn’t reset?)
  • Cap’n’Bones – bottom skull is too near to the dungeon room edge
  • changed: improved mouse-over on Gauntlet of Power weapon boxees
  • Cycle Bro fight not fun for most players, make their attack more interesting
  • give Timer-item a longer cooldown/power-up requirement?
  • Rendering issues with blood particles to 100%

TODO

  • better description for “piercing” item ?
  • Dungeon 2 and 4 should be bigger (dungeons only cover 1 level, instead of 2 or 3)
  • idea: Trador room/device to trade Blue/Purple gems with conversion rate
  • keep blown-up room entities (turrets, spikes,etc) blown-up when re-entering
  • make Panic button also give you some HP? (and increase it’s loot-usage)
  • optional: Block secret doors when still in a room and opened with a bomb
  • some of the rare items are WAY too rare (even I haven’t seen Shovel of Descent or Ring of teleportation)
