Hey it’s me, Pascal from Orangepixel!
This year marks my 20 year anniversary as a full time independent game developer, and that made me muse a little about the early days of Orangepixel.
Now hands up if you been here for the TRUE early days and played Orangepixel games from 2004 – 2007? Obviously I can not see your hands through this email, but I’m fairly sure there are not that many hands going up!
But perhaps you do want to play some of those early games, and see where it all began? YOU CAN! I zipped up these old games, and added a link to a J2ME emulator (old phones that outdate the iOS and Android smartphones, if you want to see one, you can probably ask your parents or maybe even grandparents if they still have a Nokia somewhere).
And these games are now freely available from the Orangepixel website, check this post for the download ZIP file and a link to a working emulator. And if you don’t have time to play them yourself, I actually made a video showing a couple of them and talking a little bit about the technical and design limitations of the good old days.
Of course work on the new games is still going strong, I just pushed a new beta for Gauntlet of Power to Steam, and I’m aiming to have it as a full release by the end of this week. It adds a Black smith, a new realm (the Dark Woods) and a Friendly type that will buzz around you and help you attack enemies! Pretty sweet update!
The rest of the week my focus is on Regulator City.. which is where I’m diving back into right now after pressing the Send button on this email…
Bye!
– Pascal
